WebParticularly well-known for his depictions of horses, Géricault is a prominent figure of Romanticism—an artistic movement that spread throughout Europe during the first half of the 19 th century. Romanticism can be identified by an interest in emotions and nature, often through work on color and movement. Born in Rouen, France, Géricault was educated in the tradition of English sporting art by Carle Vernet and classical figure composition by Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, a rigorous classicist who disapproved of his student's impulsive temperament while recognizing his talent.
